WHY SHOULD YOU PLAN?
The number one way to maximize your vacation time is simple: plan ahead. While it may seem like there is never enough time in the day, National Plan for Vacation Day celebrated annually January encourages you to schedule the trips you want to take this year.
Planning is an important step in making vacation possible. According to Project: Time Off, a majority (52%) of workers who set aside time each year to plan for travel take all their time off compared to just 40% of non-planners. Planners also tend to take longer vacations. While 75% of planners take a week or more off at a time, non-planners take significantly fewer days. In addition to taking more days off, planning ahead usually means better pricing and availability for flights, resorts, and cruises. And who doesn't want to get the best prices?
The benefits of planning extend beyond days spent away from the office for rest and rejuvenation. Planners report greater happiness than non-planners with their relationships, health, well-being, company, and overall quality of life. They experienced lower levels of stress and burnout and improved productivity upon returning to the workplace.
WHERE DO YOU START?
First, look at your calendar-work and family! How many PTO days do you have available to you? What family commitments do you have this year like graduations, weddings, etc. that you need to work around? Do you have a big milestone celebration like a birthday or anniversary you'd love to turn into a bucket list trip? The most popular, and usually more expensive, travel times are when school breaks happen. Can you vacation other times of year for better pricing, or do you need to go when your kids are out of school? Your desired travel dates is the first question I will ask when working together.
Next, start dreaming! Where have you always wanted to go? Are you looking for a relaxing beach getaway, or does the idea of island hopping while on a cruise interest you? Maybe you've always wanted to take your kids to Disney World and experience the magic? Do you and your BFF need to meet up for girls' getaway? Make a list of places to go and things to do and decide which one you will mark off the list this year.
